FAQ

Q1.

What is the Blood Alcohol Content limit for drivers in Taiwan?

A1. The legal limit is 0.25mg/litre for breath alcohol level tests, approximately 0.05% Blood Alcohol Concentration.

Q2. How many drinks does it take to be over 0.05% BAC?
A2.

There are many factors which effect blood alcohol concentration (BAC) such as gender, body weight & percentage of water make up, alcohol strength, recent consumption of food, health and how long after drinking the test is taken, etc. For instance, two glasses of alcohol beverage in one hour with no consumption of food may result in a positive test for the average male. Attached is a BAC chart detailing approximate levels for different weights. (For reference only)

Alcohol is metabolized at a rate of .015 per hour.
Hours since first drink 1 2 3 4 5 6
Subtrict from BAC 0.015 0.03 0.045 0.060 0.075 0.090

For example, if a 200lb. Male has 8 drinks in 6 hours, his BAC would be about 0.174 minus 0.090. So his BAC would be 0.084 and he would still be legally drunk(0.080).
One drink is defined at 1.5oz spirit, 12oz lager beer, 5oz wine.

Q3. What is responsible drinking?
A3. The responsible drinking means making sensible decisions in the consumption or non-consumption of alcohol beverage. Many people enjoy drinking and find it a sociable and relaxing thing to do. However, there are things that you shouldn't do before or after drinking, such as driving, operating machinery, exercising, work at heights or when taking certain medications.

Q4. How much is too much to drink each day?
A4. There is no absolute answer - the amount can vary from one individual to another. However, current daily guidelines in the UK for sensible drinking is 3-4 units or less for males and 2-3 units or less for females. In the United States, recommended daily intake is no more than 2 units for males and 1 unit for females.

Q5. Why women drink less than men according to guidelines in UK?
A5.

A woman drinking the same amount of alcohol as a man will get intoxicated faster because she has a lower proportion of water in her body weight. Women may therefore have a higher blood alcohol concentration in the body tissue and alcohol consumption may have a longer lasting effect. Attached is BAC chart for reference only.

Q6. How do I calculate my unit consumption?
A6.

A unit is 8 gram of pure alcohol. One unit of pure alcohol equals 284ml regular larger, beer or cider at 3.5% alcohol by volume (abv); a 25ml spirit at 40% abv; a small glass of 9% abv wine. Attached is unit calculator (for reference only).

Standard drinks in common containers of various alcoholic beverages:

Light beer (2.7% alcohol)
1 can/375

= 0.8 of a standard drink
Medium light beer (3.5% alcohol)
1 can/375ml

= 1 standard drink
Regular beer (4.9% alcohol)
1 can/375ml
1 jug
1 slab (cans or stubbies)

= 1 1/2 standard drinks
= 4 standard drinks
= about 36 to 40 standard drinks
Wine (9.5%-13% alcohol)
750 ml bottle
4 liter cask

= about 7 to 8 standard drinks
= about 30 to 40 standard drinks
Spirits
1 nip (30 ml)

= 1 standard drink
Pre-mixed spirits (around 5% alcohol)
1 can (375 ml)

= 1 1/2 standard drinks

Q7. After consuming alcohol, does the consumption of any other beverage help to reduce the percentage of blood alcohol concentration?
A7. There is no evidence to show that consumption of any other beverage can reduce the percentage of blood alcohol concentration after consumption of alcohol. Alcohol is metabolized at a rate of 0.015mg alcohol/litter per hour in human body.

Q8. Is it okay to drink in pregnancy?
A8. Doctors recommend that you do not drink alcohol during pregnancy. Women who are trying to conceive or who are pregnant should avoid getting drunk and are advised to consume no more than one to two units of alcohol once or twice a week.

Q9. Do all drinks contain the same amount of alcohol?
A9. In most countries a standard serving unit of beer, wine or spirit is more or less the same amount of alcohol.
