“I pledge NOT to drink and drive” campaign upgraded! TBAF joins hands with Taipei City Government to strengthen traffic safety education. From “no drink driving” to “see & be seen”, jointly building an all-age friendly urban road culture

The Taiwan Beverage Alcohol Forum (TBAF) today (August 7th) organizes the “2025 ‘I pledge NOT to drink and drive’ and ‘see & be seen’ safety protection press conference”. Once again TBAF invites the Taipei City Government to join hand, echoing the annual theme policy “see & be seen” of Taipei City’s Department of Transport, to continue the advocacy efforts of “I pledge NOT to drink and drive”. TBAF has invited Taipei City Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安), Taipei City Transportation Department Director Hsieh Ming-hong (謝銘鴻), Taipei City Education Department Deputy-Director Deng Jin-chuan (鄧進權), as well as local and foreign alcohol companies, enterprises and civic organizations to participate in this event. TBAF solicits everyone to take concrete actions and pledge commitment to traffic safety and responsible drinking behavior, so as to let the concept of "no drink driving" take root in life of both adults and children, instead of just empty propaganda words.

Strengthen “I pledge NOT to drink and drive” education. TBAF donates traffic guidance equipment to protect school children.

Launched in 2017, the “I pledge NOT to drink and drive” campaign has garnered support from nearly 400,000 people, demonstrating a high level of consensus in society on road safety and responsible drinking behavior. This year TBAF continues this campaign and sets the target of 500, 000 people and has highlighted dual themes of “traffic safety x NO drink driving”. Through traffic guidance equipment donation, campus promotion activities and pledging campaign, TBAF hopes to further the concept of “no drink driving” to the daily environment of pedestrians and school children, enhancing the respect for road users and safeguard our next generation.

This year, TBAF donates traffic guidance vests and flags, LED shoulder lights to the Taipei City Government to help improve traffic safety conditions around school districts and increase the visibility and security of on-duty traffic guidance volunteers. TBAF says that the first step in building a safe city is to establish children’s basic understanding of traffic safety. Meanwhile, it is important to strengthen road users’ awareness on safety and “no drink driving”, practicing the mutually beneficial spirit of “see & be seen, let’s protect each other”. TBAF also continues to work together with Taipei City Department of Education to promote the concepts of “no drinking for minors” and “do not drink even a drop of alcohol” on campuses, deepening the “responsible drinking culture” from the educational side.

“No drink driving” plus ”see & be seen”—traffic safety starts from showing respect and taking responsibility

Taipei City Mayor Chiang Wan-an says at the press conference that: “This slogan ‘see & be seen’ is a simple yet powerful statement. We hope that every road user can respect each other and proactively see the presence of other people, and that the drivers are willing to slow down and pedestrians are willing to stop, look and listen—each of such choice of action is to protect lives. In particular, the Taipei City Government has been promoting traffic safety over the years, ‘no drink driving’ is the bottom line for urban security.”

TBAF Chairman Terrence ONG (王德勤) states that: “The advocacy of ‘no drink driving’ is never a short-term slogan, instead, it is an accumulative social action. By combining public policy, self-discipline of alcohol companies and citizen support, together we promote responsible drinking behavior and safety awareness and let these concepts gradually take root in our lives.” He points out further that in addition to promoting “no drink driving”, this year’s press conference also covers issues of school routes security, traffic guidance equipment and campus education. He says: “We also organize the ‘Guardian Flag Co-creation’ program, inviting TBAF members and corporate partners to participate in person to help beautify these flags, making each flag a silent reminder of child protection and adherence to the ‘no drink driving’ principle.”

British Office Taipei Representative Ruth Bradley-Jones joins the press conference and commends Taiwan’s hard work and efforts in promoting responsible drinking and traffic safety. She says that Taiwan is the third exporting market for UK’s Scotch whisky, and both Taiwan and UK value high quality alcohol beverages as well as healthy drinking culture. She praises TBAF for its long-term dedication to public education and for shouldering corporate responsibility through activities such as donating traffic guidance equipment. She emphasizes that UK is proud of its whisky culture and is dedicated to promoting responsible drinking behavior. She looks forward to working together with Taiwan to continue building a safer and healthier society.

Collaboration of public and private sectors to realize traffic safety culture. Statistics indicate the importance of drink-driving prevention.

According to statistics from the Taipei City Police Department in 2024, the age group 18 to 24 years old is most accident-prone, accounting for 19.8% of all accidents, and motorcycle accidents are as high as 22.4%. The elderly people over the age of 65 are high-risk group for pedestrian accidents. This highlights the importance of drink-driving prevention for the young people, and pedestrian safety education for the elderly. This also showcases the necessity for TBAF to continue its promotion of traffic safety education.

TBAF Chairman Terrence ONG says that: “We always believe that to create a safe city, it requires the joint efforts of the government, the private sector, and the citizens. Traffic safety is not just a personally choice, it is also a code of conduct that everyone must uphold.” TBAF plans to deepen its collaboration with the Taipei City Traffic Department and Education Department from 2025 onward to launch a series of traffic safety and responsible drinking promotion activities. TBAF hopes to make "safety" not only a personal responsibility but also a common value of the city.

The Taipei City Government states that it will continue to work with private organizations such as TBAF to promote education and advocacy programs—from policies, education to social participation—to fully implement traffic safety culture and protect the safety of citizens each time they are on the road.

“No driving after drinking; zero-tolerance for drink-driving.” “No drink driving” is being responsible for oneself and for others. It should also become a consensus for each and every citizen. TBAF sincerely invites everyone to join the “I pledge NOT to drink and drive” campaign and co-create a zero-drink-driving traffic environment, making every home-going journey safer.
